What This Edition Is Not

What It Is

Anthony of Padua left no promises behind.

What he left is a prayer. It has been said, essentially unchanged, for eight hundred years — by friars in Padua, by pilgrims who arrive there still, and by anyone who chose it as a companion rather than as a solution.

This edition gathers, in a single digital volume, the complete Latin text, a plain English translation, the nine-night practice associated with it, and the historical background that places it in the Franciscan tradition. Nothing is promised about what the prayer will do. Only the prayer itself, and the tradition that has kept it, are offered.

Si quæris miracula,
Mors, error, calamitas,
Dæmon, lepra fugiunt,
Ægri surgunt sani.

If then you ask for miracles,
death, error, all calamities,
the leprosy and demons fly,
the sick, by him made whole, arise.

First four lines of the Si Quaeris Miracula
Attributed to Saint Bonaventure, c. 1232

The man who wrote it — briefly.

He was born Fernando Martins de Bulhões in Lisbon, in 1195. He entered the Augustinian order at fifteen, and transferred to the newly founded Franciscans at twenty-five, taking the name Anthony.

He preached across northern Italy and southern France, and was chosen by Francis of Assisi himself as the first Franciscan appointed to teach theology to his fellow friars. He died near Padua on the 13th of June, 1231, at the age of thirty-five.

He was canonised less than a year later, in one of the swiftest canonisations in the history of the Church. Seven centuries after his death, in 1946, he was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII.
